Great news! LOCR has reached an agreement with LOPR and we will open to Masters and Varsity/Alumni rowing on Monday 7/6!
Get registered this weekend and start limbering up now! I and the coaching staff are going to greatly appreciate everyones patience with this process. Please remember that we are starting slow and working on practicing our cleaning and launching routines. Your help and understanding will go a long way to helping us get back to full speed!
We've organized the remaining summer months into the month of July and August.
For these months we will be contending with a CLOSED RAMP. Please review the access map bellow
This month of June has shown us many things. The most interesting thing i've come to realize is that, if its not one thing, its another. The meaning of these words drives straight to our inner mindsets and nature of being. Its saying that we will always be tuned into our fears and worries, and if its not whats bothering you now, it would simply be another thing.
So where am i going with this idiom? Our nature as humans is to perceive threats and avoid them to survive. We are programed to see problems and if we arn't mindful of our own inner thoughts and feelings we can easily be swept up in the powerful emotions. When we accept our nature we can more mindfully observe our thoughts and make deliberate choices to engage in a line of productive worrying OR disengage from negative thoughts around things you cant control.
I cant control the signing of our contract with LOPR. I've felt powerless to help our members get back to the sport they love! If i could magically get the contract signed, the next problem will arise!!!
So without the path open, we wont have access to the boathouse ramp. This means if we get the contract signed, rowing this summer will involve being shuttled to the boathouse via launch from the amphitheater dock. This is a minor issue with the 2x2 launch plan we have. So for a problem like this one, this is the best time to have to deal with it. That said, i have taken the initiative to put 8 singles on our trailer for use off the boathouse dock.
Until we have things with the city figured out, we will accommodate our steadfast members who simply want to get out and enjoy their passions. This sport and this team are so much more than just a workout group to stay fit. We are a family of like-minded individuals who found acceptance, comradery and a great workout in rowing at LOCR. I'm sure we can get through this issue and face the next one.
Stay positive while dealing with your problems, because if its not one thing, its another.
There are many very important qualities that we look for in our rowers. One of the big ones i've seen and given is respect. A rower cultivates a respect for another rower because they share something. They share an experience that can only be known through living it. A rower can be held accountable to herself or himself on race or test day. We all expect to be held to the same standards and to judge someone on how fast they can move a boat with their teammates down a 2000m course.
We teach the things we want to see in our own society. In recent days it has been impossible to ignore the movement for equality going on around us. As a boathouse and program we are looking at the 8-ways to take action.
Knowledge is power. Get informed, read the history, and make your voice heard.
Working out has been a challenge for many during these socially distanced months. Virtual challenges and competitions are becoming the norm and have shown that creativity is our greatest weapon against the isolation. We have hosted daily weekday zoom sessions at 4:30 and 5pm for juniors (and motivated masters) as well as 3x a week morning ergs with Leo for Masters (and motivated juniors) These sessions have allowed us to keep a modicum of connection.
Some of us have been able to step up to the challenge of getting creative and keeping connected with virtual workouts and challenges. On spotlight this week is Josh L, Ben C, and Ethan M who took the time to submit a 2k for regionals and qualify for the virtual national championships at the end of this week! These guys have been proactive and dedicated to themselves and their improvment. This will be the first virtual nationals ever and i'm proud that these guys have stepped up to represent LOCR against the nation!
Black Lives matter
Amidst the recent protest i think its important we all stop and think about our place in this social system we all subscribe to. Its important not to look away, NOT to stay silent. Raise your awareness and understanding of the situation we are in with knowledge and not speculation or opinions.
Its impossible to empathize with things you cant understand, which is where knowledge is true power. As an individual who claims to be a citizen of this country, state, and city you have to start by educating yourself. I'm proud to have rowed by 8:46 piece with the nationals guys above in honor of George Floyd on the day of his memorial. #rowforequality is the hashtag to use if you can commit to the piece.
All programs before June 15th are cancelled,
Programs after June 15th are currently ON HOLD and not taking registrations.
